It happened in the year 2015.
Around 9pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof murdered 9 African American members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. I grew up in an African Methodist Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, very similar to Mother Emanuel. It is reported that Roof attended the weekly Bible Study meeting. My grandmother attended that same type of weekly meetings with roughly 10 regular attendees. This could have been my Grandmother. This could have been my childhood church. This could have been my city. This could have been me. This is why I wrote CAN I BE REAL. This is why I created CAN I BE REAL Inc. To inspire people to not just get angry and forget about injustice, but to create a tangible plan on how they will increase diversity, equity and inclusion in whatever area of their life they choose. This is what keeps me fighting.
Can I Be Real strives to enrich the lives of others by providing hope and inspiration in the pursuit of eliminating ignorance.
Can I Be Real is a non-profit organization that seeks to empower communities to eliminate ignorance through education, artistic expression, and entrepreneurship.
